Mother Teresa was born in August 1910 at Skopje in Yugoslavia. She has dedicated her whole life to the service of the poor and the sick. Sher served not only the people of India but also the entire world. Her real name was Agness. She came to Kolkata at the age of nineteen and joined the teaching profession. But the distress of poor and sick people touched her heart and made her very sad. She left teaching to serve those people. She founded charitable organizations like ‘Nirmal Hriday’ and ‘Missionaries of Charity’. Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1976 and Bharat Ratna in 1980. Though Mother Teresa heaved her last sigh on 5th September 1997, she will be remembered forever.

Mother Teresa, indeed, was the greatest woman of the twentieth century. In fact, she is one of the greatest persons in history. She was born in August 1910 at Skopje in Yugoslavia. Her real name was Agnes Gonxha Bejaxhiu. Teresa was her adopted name after a nun of the middle ages. She went to Ireland in 1928 and joined the Loreto Congregation. A year later, she sailed to Kolkata in India, where she became the Principal of St. Agness High School for girls. Later, she adopted Indian citizenship in 1948. She started collecting deserted people from the streets and began to serve them. Her first great achievement came when she founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950. She Founded The “Nirmal Hriday” in 1956, which became a home for the destitute on the verge of death. Later, she also started Brothers of Charity. With the passage of time, homes for destitute were started by her missionaries all over the world. She won several awards and prizes. In October 1979, she received the Nobel Peace Prize. She received the Bharat Ratna Award in 1980 and Soviet Land Nehru Award in 1990. She suffered pneumonia in 1991, but still, she continued her noble work of serving the poor, the needy, and the helpless. She herself and her nuns led an extremely simple life. She died of cardiac arrest in 1997 and was given a state funeral by the Government of India. She has since been canonized. She will always be remembered by mankind.
